It’s Not Over Yet

With the Mets current 5 game winning streak, and another game tonight as part of a doubleheader, there is no doubt they are doing great right now. If they sweep the Rockies tonight they will be only 3 games out of the Wild Card. Omar Minaya cannot give up yet. This year is like many other years for the Mets. They are far back but then make a great run to get back in it. I guarantee it that in a month or two they will be driving me crazy, they will keep losing but still be in the race. But maybe the Mets will make a trade today or tomorrow.

Ryan Garko was the perfect fit for the Mets, a good, affordable, young player who is under contract and can hit. The only problem is that Daniel Murphy has found a home at first base and he may even stay there when Carlos Delgado comes back. Murphy is playing gold glove defense in fact, so I would like to see what happens then.

But the Rays want to shed payroll. They have been linked in rumor to be shopping Scott Kazmir to the Mets, but we don’t want him. Carlos Pena is also available, and I heard Carl Crawford can also be traded in an offer they can’t turn down. We don’t need Pena unless he can play some other position than first base, which as far as I know he can’t, but Kazmir and Crawford would be absolutely PERFECT fits. Admit it, Oliver Perez sucks, and Jon Niese may not be full-time ready for the bigs. We need a lefty. We need a new starter anyway, because Livan Hernandez is starting to fall off the table, and Mike Pelfrey is not that consistant. Scott Kazmir is having a bad year, but pitching coach Dan Warthen is good at fixing guys like him. He is a good buy-low candidate. As for Crawford, we need a left fielder. We never had a left fielder, all year. At first it was supposed to be Daniel Murphy, but he stunk there so he got moved to first base. Since then we’ve had Fernando Martinez, Gary Sheffield, Cory Sullivan, Nick Evans, and Jeremy Reed. None have worked. We don’t have a left fielder for next year, either, unless you think F-Mart will magically be a viable option next year. Crawford is the ideal player for Citi Field; great defense, great speed, and a line drive hitter who has decent pop in his bat. Imagine all the triples we’d have between him and Jose Reyes. It would be so much fun to watch! I say trade the whole farm. Trade Jennry Mejia, trade Brad Holt, trade Ike Davis, whoever it takes. How many prospects like them actually wind up being successful major leaguers? And more successful then Scott Kazmir or Carl Crawford? Not many. The chances are so slim that they will be a star, I say make a trade.

This season isn’t over yet, this hot surge has gotten me even more pumped for this year.

Trade Deadline Part II

Well, the only other trade that happened today was the biggest. Manny Ramirez is now a Dodger. Jason Bay is now a Red Sox. And the Pirates got 4 prospects, including Andy LaRoach from LA and Brandon Moss from Boston. This was a horrible deal for the Sox, giving up arguably their best hitter (David Ortiz) on the team. The Dodgers got a total STEAL, they get Manny Ramirez for just Andy LaRoach and Bryan Morris. Unbelievable. And the Sox get Jason Bay for Moss and Craig Hansen. Both are just middle value prospects, and the Mets had to give up F-Mart or Niese. Maybe I like these three-way trades

The Mets did absolutely nothing when it came down to it, and I really have mixed emotions about this. I still am not really sure what I would have done, but if I could have gotten Bay for Fernando Martinez and Robert Parnell, which I think the Pirates would have done in a heartbeat, I would have done it. Omar Minaya is convinced, however, that he will be able to get a player off of waivers during August, but if he doesn’t, he is confident with the current club.

Trade Deadline Part I

Trades so far:

  • Pudge Rodriguez to Yankees for Kyle Farsworth.
  • LaTroy Hawkins to Astros for money and minor league second baseman.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. to White Sox for 2 minor league players, including Nick Masset.
  • Arthur Rhodes to Marlins for Gaby Hernandez.

I guess if the Mets get another reliever it won’t be Rhodes. However I here the Mariners are shopping J.J. Putz but I doubt the Mets get him. I also read on metsblog.com that as of 1:00 ET today, Omar Minaya is feeling “downcast” about making a deal.

Also, reports are coming in the the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida three-way deal has fallen apart. Just like I suspected. This doesn’t mean that Bay won’t be traded, as I hear the Rays are also interested.

I will try to post again with the rest of the trades either tonight or tomorrow.

Prediction: Mets to Remain Silent at Deadline

The Braves just traded Mark Teixiera to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and a minor league pitcher. Glad he’s out of the division.

I do not think the Mets will make a move this trade deadline. With Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese both untouchable. If they do make a move it seems Scott Schoenweis will be the most likely to go. Minaya said he would not include Aaron Heilman in a deal for Brian Fuentas, which I think is a horrible idea. Get Heilman out of here, especially when someone will take him. Fuentas would be a perfect fit fot the Mets, with the troubles Feliciano and Schoenweis have had. He could close out games when Wagner needs rest, and he could pitch the eighth inning because Duaner Sanchez is too inconsistent.

I know the Mets won’t trade Fernando Martinez, and I hope they won’t, but I also hope they don’t stay silent. He could turn out to be a bomb, and with the surprise production of Nick Evans, why not explore the market? I say try and go for Martinez, and Schoenweis for Raul Ibanez and Arthur Rhodes. Of course, you can try Schoenweis and Martinez and possibly someone else for Fuentas and Holliday,  but that won’t happen. Maybe Jason Bay?

I don’t think Fuentas or Holliday will be traded. Nor will Manny Ramirez, but Jason Bay could be on the move. I can’t wait to see what happens on Thursday.

Some More Trading

I was going to post an entry earlier this morning, but something told me to wait. Now I know why.

First off, let me talk about the Nady trade. That’s right, Xavier Nady was traded to the Yankees last night along with LHP Damaso Marte for 4 minor leaguers, including Ross Ohlendorf. What does this meaan for the Mets? I say its actually a good thing. From the way things were looking, the Mets were nowhere near to making a deal with the Pirates for Nady, and I completely gave up all hope that they would about 4 days ago. The benifit for the Mets here is that some other NL club, like the Braves, who aren’t dead yet, didn’t get him, so they won’t have to deal with him.

The next trade had a bit of a bigger impact for the Mets. The Dodgers acquired IF/OF Casey Blake for 2 minor leaguers earlier today. Blake was on the list for possible outfielders for the Mets, but not anymore I guess. Raul Ibanez, Jaun Rivera, Adam Dunn, and Mark Kotsay still remain available, but Omar Minaya said yesterday that he doesn’t plan to make a big move. I think Dunn would be a great fit for the Mets, who could definitely use a little more power, but I don’t thikn the Mets could afford to give up the prospects for him.

And lastly Anthony Reyes. The once-top-prospect-but-now-lowly-regarded pitcher was sold to the Cleveland Indians. The Mets, along with the Phillies and Braves, had expressed some interest in the righty, but any talks that happened were quickly put aside as not serious.

At this point, I would say if the Mets do make a trade, it would be for Padres OF Brian Giles. Giles used to be in the Mets organization, but was traded for Jason Bay (I forget, if anybody could just jog my memory I would appreciate it). With Ryan Church just recently cleared for light activites, I think this would be a great acquisition for the Mets because I think Church is not ready to come back. I think he is going to get hurt again, so any outfield coverage at this point would be nice. There is no way Chavez and Tatis can keep this up for 2 (hopefully 3) more months
